Strawberry Hill in Twickenham is the whimsical Gothic Revival villa created by the writer Horace Walpole from the 1740s. Assembled piecemeal from a modest cottage, its battlements, pinnacles and fan-vaulted rooms imitated medieval churches and castles, launching a fashion that swept British architecture. Walpole used its atmosphere to inspire his novel The Castle of Otranto, regarded as the first Gothic novel. Restored with white pinnacled exterior and richly coloured interiors, it captures a playful antiquarian spirit.
