Fynbos — a fine-leaved shrubland born of Mediterranean climate and recurring fire — grows nowhere on Earth but the Cape, and it makes this small corner of South Africa one of the planet's richest centres of plant diversity. The protected areas of the Cape Floral Region, a mosaic of national parks, wilderness areas, reserves and mountain catchments at the country's southwestern tip, safeguard thousands of species found nowhere else. UNESCO inscribed the property in 2004.
