Within its medieval walls, little Bardejov preserves the anatomy of a fortified trading town of eastern Slovakia almost perfectly: a sloping market square, Gothic burgher houses and surviving fortifications. Its small Jewish quarter, gathered around an 18th-century synagogue, records a community central to the town's later story. Bardejov's completeness earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000.
