Time forgot Vlkolínec, and the world is richer for it: 45 traditional buildings — log houses in the manner once common across central Europe's mountains — stand together on a hillside in central Slovakia, the most complete such ensemble in the region. Still a living hamlet beneath the Veľká Fatra hills, it preserves the look and layout of a vernacular village intact. UNESCO inscribed Vlkolínec in 1993.
