Silver and gold drew miners to the volcanic hills of central Slovakia, and Banská Štiavnica grew from a medieval mining camp into a handsome town of Renaissance palaces, churches of the 16th century and graceful squares crowned by two castles. The surrounding country still bears the dams, shafts and workings of centuries of mining and metallurgy that made the town famous among Europe's engineers. UNESCO inscribed town and technical monuments together in 1993.
