Four hills in Rwanda hold the memory of the 1994 genocide, in which an estimated one million people were murdered between April and July — Tutsi above all, alongside moderate Hutu and Twa. The church at Nyamata and the technical school at Murambi were themselves scenes of massacre; Gisozi in Kigali holds the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the graves of more than 250,000 victims; Bisesero honours two months of desperate resistance. UNESCO inscribed the memorial sites in 2023.
