Constantin Brâncuşi, the sculptor who taught modern art to think in pure form, returned to his native Gorj County in 1937–1938 to honour Târgu Jiu's dead of the First World War. The result runs along a single axis through the town: the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the soaring Endless Column, linked by the Avenue of Heroes. Part war memorial, part meditation on existence itself, the ensemble was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024.
