Painted from ground to eaves, the churches of northern Moldavia wear their theology on the outside: entire fresco cycles — Last Judgements, sieges, processions of saints — cover the exterior walls in colours that have withstood the weather since the 15th and 16th centuries. Eight churches make up the group, with Suceviţa Monastery's church alone depicting the Ladder of St John Climacus. Masterworks of post-Byzantine art, they were inscribed by UNESCO in 1993.
