In the mountain villages of Maramureş, northern Romania, carpenters raised churches entirely of timber, crowning narrow, high naves with shingled roofs and improbably tall, slender towers at their western ends. Eight of these churches, built across different periods and valleys, together show the full range of the region's woodworking genius, single- and double-roofed alike. UNESCO inscribed the group on the World Heritage List in 1999.
