Danube Delta

Before the Danube finally empties into the Black Sea it unravels into Europe's largest and best-preserved delta — a labyrinth of channels, reed beds, lakes and floating islands in Romania's Tulcea County. More than 300 bird species pass through or breed here, from pelicans to pygmy cormorants, and its waters hold 45 species of freshwater fish. A paradise for slow boat travel and birdwatching, the delta has held UNESCO Natural World Heritage status since 1991.
