Cistercian austerity has rarely been this beautiful. Founded by King Alfonso I in the 12th century north of Lisbon, the Monastery of Alcobaça pairs monumental scale with pure lines and superb stone, a summit of Cistercian Gothic — and in its transept the carved tombs of Pedro I and Inês de Castro preserve Portugal's most tragic love story. UNESCO inscribed the abbey in 1989.
