Begun as a Templar stronghold proclaiming the Reconquest, the Convent of Christ in Tomar changed meaning with its masters: passed in 1344 to the Order of Christ, it came to celebrate Portugal's opening to other civilizations in the Manueline age. The round Charola of the Templars and the famous carved window of the chapter house bookend that transformation. UNESCO inscribed the convent in 1983.
