A battlefield vow built Batalha. Raised by the Dominicans to give thanks for Portugal's victory over Castile at Aljubarrota in 1385, the monastery absorbed the crown's ambition for two centuries, incubating a national Gothic style steeped in Manueline invention — the Royal Cloister is its masterpiece, the roofless Unfinished Chapels its most haunting corner. UNESCO listed the Monastery of Batalha in 1983.
