Every ship crossing the Atlantic once called at Angra. From the 15th century until steam power rewrote the sea lanes in the 19th, this harbour town on Terceira in the Azores was an obligatory stop, guarded by the 400-year-old fortresses of San João Baptista and San Sebastião. An earthquake struck hard in 1980, but restoration returned the streets to form, and UNESCO inscribed the central zone in 1983.
