Arequipa is carved from volcanoes. Its historic centre gleams with sillar — the pale volcanic stone that earned it the nickname 'White City' — worked by colonial masters alongside Criollo and Indigenous masons into stout walls, arcades, vaults and courtyards under richly Baroque façades, all beneath the cone of El Misti. That fusion of European and native craft brought UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000.
