A city at 2,335 meters in southern Peru whose historic center is constructed predominantly from white volcanic sillar stone and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Santa Catalina Monastery occupies an entire city block and functions as a self-contained historic town within the city, with painted streets, cloisters, and communal facilities. The Misti volcano rises to 5,822 meters directly above the city as an unobstructed visual presence.
