Cheap hydropower changed world farming from a Norwegian valley. At Rjukan and Notodden, the Norsk Hydro company harnessed waterfalls in the early 20th century to pull nitrogen from the air and turn it into artificial fertiliser, building power stations, factories, rail and ferry links and whole company towns among the mountains of Telemark. UNESCO inscribed this pioneering industrial landscape in 2015.
