Reindeer herds, boats and hunting scenes crowd the smooth rock at Alta, near the Arctic Circle — thousands of engravings and paintings left between about 4200 and 500 BC. No other site tells the human story of the prehistoric Far North so richly, recording how communities lived, hunted and made sense of their world at Europe's edge. The Rock Art of Alta entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
