Carved dragons and interlacing beasts writhe around the north portal of Urnes Stave Church, giving their name to a whole style of Viking-age ornament. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries above the Lustrafjord in Sogn og Fjordane, the wooden church fuses Celtic echoes, Viking craft and Romanesque space into Scandinavia's most celebrated timber architecture. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
