Osun, the Yoruba goddess of fertility, is believed to dwell in the forest on the edge of Osogbo — one of the last stands of primary high forest in southern Nigeria. Shrines, sanctuaries and striking sculptures line the grove and its winding river, and an annual festival still draws worshippers from across the Yoruba world. Probably the last sacred grove of its kind, Osun-Osogbo was inscribed by UNESCO in 2005.
