Historic Centre of Agadez

The mud-brick minaret of Agadez climbs 27 metres — the tallest such structure anywhere — above a caravan city on the Sahara's southern rim. Agadez grew in the 15th and 16th centuries under the Sultanate of Aïr, when Tuareg groups settled along the lines of their old encampments, fixing the street pattern of its 11 irregular quarters, still a showcase of earthen architecture. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 2013.
