A wool merchant built the universe in his living room. Between 1774 and 1781, Eise Eisinga of Franeker constructed a working scale model of the solar system across his ceiling, driven by a single pendulum clock: Sun, Moon, Earth and the five planets then known, from Mercury to Saturn, all moving in real time at true relative distances. The oldest working planetarium on Earth became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
