Steam still rules at Lemmer. The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal, opened in 1920 in Friesland, is the largest steam-powered pumping station ever constructed — and it remains in working order, fired up when Friesland's waters rise too high. It caps centuries of Dutch engineering devoted to holding back the water, a distinction UNESCO recognised with World Heritage status in 1998.
