Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout

Nineteen windmills stand along the waterways at Kinderdijk, the classic image of the Dutch fight to keep water off the land. Drainage works in this corner of South Holland began in the Middle Ages and never stopped; dykes, reservoirs, pumping stations and the beautifully kept mills together show every element of the technology. UNESCO inscribed the Kinderdijk-Elshout network in 1997 — come at dusk, when the sails catch low light.
