Seven ensembles of temples, stupas and palaces distil the genius of Newar builders across the Kathmandu Valley: the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu's Hanuman Dhoka, Patan and Bhaktapur, the great Buddhist stupas at Swayambhu and Bauddhanath, and the Hindu temple sites of Pashupati and Changu Narayan. Wood carving, pagoda roofs and living ritual meet at every turn. UNESCO inscribed the valley in 1979, among Asia's foundational listings.
