Kumbheshwar is a rare five-tiered temple in Patan dedicated to Shiva, one of only two such tall pagodas in the Kathmandu Valley. Built in the fourteenth century and later expanded, it rises above a pair of ponds whose water is believed to originate from the sacred lake of Gosaikunda high in the mountains. During Janai Purnima a temporary shrine is erected in the tank and thousands of pilgrims converge. Visitors admire the temple's soaring profile, the surrounding stone sculptures and water spouts, and the festive gatherings that animate its.
