Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatepetl

On the flanks of the Popocatepetl volcano, Franciscan, Dominican and Augustinian friars raised a chain of monasteries in the early 16th century as spearheads of Mexico's evangelisation. The 15 complexes across Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala pioneered a new architecture of conversion — vast open atria and corner posa chapels for outdoor worship — that was copied across the country and beyond. UNESCO inscribed the series in 1994, and it survives in superb condition.
