Querétaro's street map tells its story: the conquerors' rigid grid sits beside the crooked lanes of the indigenous quarters, a rare survival from a town where Otomi, Tarasco, Chichimeca and Spanish communities lived side by side. Its 17th- and 18th-century golden age filled the centre with lavish Baroque churches and civic buildings, and UNESCO listed the monuments zone as World Heritage in 1996.
