A central Mexican city founded in the 16th century and today one of the fastest-growing economic centers in the country, Querétaro preserves a historic center designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its colonial religious architecture. The 74-arch aqueduct completed in 1738, which supplied the city for over a century, remains intact and visible on the northern approach. The city was the site of Emperor Maximilian's trial and execution in 1867, and the Cerro de las Campanas hill where this occurred is now a public monument.
