Pre-Hispanic Town of Uxmal

Uxmal is where Maya architecture reached full flower. Founded around AD 700 in the Yucatán and home to perhaps 25,000 people, the town raised its major buildings between 700 and 1000 with an eye on the heavens — the Pyramid of the Soothsayer towers over a ceremonial core encrusted with masks of Chaac, the rain god. Together with neighbouring Kabah, Labna and Sayil, it earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996.
