A Classic Maya city in the Puuc Hills of southwestern Yucatán, Uxmal is considered one of the finest examples of Maya architecture for the quality of its masonry and the sophistication of its decorative programs. The Pyramid of the Magician has an unusual elliptical base plan unique in Maya architecture, and the Governor's Palace mosaic frieze spans nearly 100 meters with 20,000 individual carved pieces. Evening sound-and-light presentations project on the central structures, creating atmospheric photographic opportunities.
