Modern labour migration has a starting point, and it is a modest stone compound in Port Louis. From 1834 Britain used Mauritius for its self-styled 'great experiment', replacing enslaved workers with indentured labourers; nearly half a million people from India passed through Aapravasi Ghat by 1920, bound for sugar estates on the island or colonies across the globe. UNESCO inscribed the 1,640-square-metre site in 2006 as the emblem of the indenture era.
