Trade has flowed down the Quebrada de Humahuaca for some 10,000 years, following the Rio Grande from the high desert plateau toward the lowlands of northern Argentina. The gorge carries traces of every era — prehistoric hunter-gatherer camps, farming villages, stretches of the Inca road network of the 15th and 16th centuries, and towns that witnessed the wars of independence — framed by strikingly coloured mountains. UNESCO inscribed the valley as a major cultural route in 2003.
