Tomb of Lê Văn Duyệt

A viceroy's tomb and temple. The Tomb of Le Van Duyet, known locally as Lang Ong Ba Chieu, is a walled tomb-and-temple compound in the Binh Thanh district of Ho Chi Minh City, honouring Le Van Duyet, a powerful early-nineteenth-century general and viceroy who governed the southern region under the Nguyen dynasty. Revered by many southerners, he is treated almost as a protective deity, and his shrine remains an active place of worship.

Layout and architecture. The compound combines a formal Vietnamese tomb with an ornate temple hall, set within a garden enclosed by a decorated wall and entered through a traditional gateway. Sweeping tiled roofs, carved beams, ceramic ornament and pairs of guardian figures frame the shrine, where altars, incense and offerings honour the viceroy and his wife, whose graves lie within the grounds.

A focus of devotion and festival. Le Van Duyet's reputation for justice and his tragic posthumous disgrace and later rehabilitation have made him a folk hero, and his tomb draws steady streams of worshippers seeking blessings and good fortune. Each year, around the anniversary of his death, a large festival fills the compound with ceremonies, traditional performances and crowds, one of the notable religious events of the city.

Visiting. The tomb lies in Binh Thanh, a short taxi ride from the central districts, near the Ba Chieu market area. Entry is generally free, and visitors are welcome to explore the gardens and observe worship respectfully, with modest dress appreciated and shoes removed where required. It is quietest on ordinary weekdays and busiest during the annual festival. The peaceful, tree-shaded grounds offer a calm counterpoint to the surrounding city streets. Fortune tellers and offering vendors gather near the gate, and the compound comes vividly alive with lion dances and ceremonies during the annual festival.
