Haight-Ashbury

Haight-Ashbury is a neighborhood in central San Francisco, named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets that forms its symbolic center. Set on gentle hills just east of Golden Gate Park, it is world-famous as the birthplace of the 1960s hippie counterculture and the psychedelic movement that reshaped popular music and youth culture.

Its defining moment was the Summer of Love in 1967, when tens of thousands of young people converged on the district, drawn by cheap Victorian housing, communal living, and a spirit of experimentation. Bands including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin lived and played nearby, and the neighborhood became a global shorthand for the era's music, activism, and idealism, as well as its excesses.

Architecturally, the Haight is defined by rows of ornate Victorian and Edwardian houses, many painted in bold colors that echo the psychedelic aesthetic. The grand "painted lady" facades survived the 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city, and today they house a mix of longtime residents, students, and independent shops. The Grateful Dead's former communal house at 710 Ashbury Street still draws quiet pilgrims, marked only by a small plaque among the private Victorians that line the block.

For visitors, Upper Haight around the famous corner is lined with vintage clothing stores, record shops, bookstores, cafes, and murals that keep the counterculture legacy alive, though the mood is now more commercial than radical. Landmarks include former band residences and the corner clock frozen at 4:20. The neighborhood borders Golden Gate Park and Buena Vista Park, both good for views and green space. It is reached by several bus lines rather than the subway, and is best explored on foot, ideally combined with a stroll into the park. Spring and early autumn bring the clearest weather to this often foggy quarter.
