Gizzeria

Gizzeria is a hillside town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, in southern Italy, whose beach on the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia — known to riders as Hang Loose Beach — is one of the country's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing venues. A narrow spit enclosing a shallow lagoon and dependable wind have drawn international competition here, including World Cup events.

Wind funnels reliably along this stretch of the gulf. Thermal sea breezes and channelled synoptic winds deliver steady side-shore to side-onshore conditions, strongest and most frequent from spring through early autumn. The key feature is a shallow, protected lagoon behind the beach spit, giving flat, standable water sheltered from open-sea swell, while the seaward side offers chop and small waves for those wanting more energy. Warm Mediterranean water keeps sessions comfortable through the long season.

The flat lagoon and steady wind make Gizzeria strong for beginners and freestylers, with schools, rental centres, and standable shallows reducing risk for novices, while the exposed outer beach and windier days reward advanced riders and racers. The two water zones let mixed-ability groups share the same base.

Access is easy by southern Italian standards. Gizzeria sits close to Lamezia Terme, whose airport receives domestic and European flights, and lies just off the A2 motorway on Calabria's west coast. Beyond the water, the region offers mountain villages of the Sila interior, quiet beaches, and the Arbëreshë Albanian heritage of the local towns. The combination of a competition-grade lagoon, dependable wind, and warm water makes Gizzeria a leading Italian wind station away from the northern lakes.
