Tropea sits on a sheer volcanic tufa promontory above turquoise Tyrrhenian water on the Calabrian coast, with terracotta and cream building facades rising directly from the cliff edge. The Santa Maria dell'Isola sanctuary occupies a separate sea stack accessible by a stone pathway, forming one of the most reproduced coastal compositions in southern Italy. The beaches at the base of the cliffs, particularly Spiaggia di Tropea, rank among the cleanest on the mainland.
