Crissy Field

Crissy Field is a restored shoreline park on San Francisco Bay, set within the Presidio directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Once a military airfield, it is now tidal marsh, beach, and lawn — and one of the most photographed urban windsurfing and kitesurfing sites in the world.

The wind is a summer sea breeze funnelled through the Golden Gate. As California's interior heats up, cool Pacific air is drawn through the strait, producing a strong, steady westerly that peaks on afternoons from late spring through summer. Ebb tides push against that wind to raise short, punchy swell, while the exposed water off the beach can run choppy and fast. It is classic bay sailing beneath an iconic backdrop.

Strong current, cold water, ship traffic, and gusts make this an advanced spot. Tidal flow through the Gate is powerful, and riders need solid water skills and self-rescue ability; the bridge and the shipping channel demand awareness. Learners generally start in calmer South Bay venues before graduating here.

Access is central and easy. Crissy Field sits within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with parking, a paved promenade, and rigging space on the grass, minutes from downtown San Francisco. The beach also draws walkers, birdwatchers, and picnickers, and the restored lagoon supports shorebirds. A thick wetsuit is essential year-round, as the bay stays cold even in high summer.
