Franconia Range

New England's premier ridge walk, the Franconia Range carries the Appalachian Trail across a string of open summits in the White Mountains, with the classic loop widely rated among the finest day hikes in the eastern United States.

The circuit of roughly 8.9 miles climbs Falling Waters Trail past cascades to Little Haystack, then follows the exposed spine over Mount Lincoln to 5,249-foot Mount Lafayette, descending the Old Bridle Path for about 3,900 feet of total gain. Nearly two miles run above treeline.

Practical detail: no permit is required, but the alpine ridge offers no shelter from the region's notoriously fast-changing weather, and hypothermia is a year-round risk when clouds and wind move in. Sturdy footing and warm layers matter even in summer.

June through October is the practical season; the ridge holds ice and rime early and late, turning the loop into a serious winter climb. The Appalachian Mountain Club's Greenleaf Hut below Lafayette gives a welcome midpoint for water and shelter.
