Alpspitze

The Alpspitze, 2,628 metres, is a shapely limestone peak of the Wetterstein range rising directly above Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Its clean pyramidal form makes it one of the most photographed mountains in Germany and a symbol of the resort below.

The peak is best known for the Alpspitz-Ferrata, a popular via ferrata that climbs the rocky summit structure on cables, ladders and iron rungs, introducing many climbers to protected mountain routes each summer. It sits within an accessible yet genuine alpine setting served by modern lifts.

That ferrata is graded around A to B, moderate in technical terms but sustained and exposed, requiring a via ferrata kit, helmet and a head for heights; combined with the marked approach it makes a full and rewarding day. The north face and other lines offer harder climbing on typical Wetterstein limestone, where loose rock and fast-building afternoon storms are the main hazards. The Alpspitzbahn cable car from Garmisch lifts visitors to the Osterfelderkopf, close to the ferrata start and the famous AlpspiX viewing platform that cantilevers over the drop. The reliable season is June to October, once the rock is clear of snow, longer than on the higher glaciated peaks. Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers guides, gear rental and easy rail access from Munich. The mix of quick lift access, a genuine mountain route and spectacular views over the Zugspitze region makes the Alpspitze a classic introduction to via ferrata climbing.
