Playa de las Américas

Playa de las Américas is a purpose-built resort on the sunny south-west coast of Tenerife, but beyond its hotels lies a cluster of powerful volcanic reef breaks that have made it the Canary Islands' most famous surf zone. The reefs here are often compared to those of Hawaii for their punch.

The waves are reef breaks over lava rock, including well-known spots such as the fast left of La Izquierda and the shifting peaks nearby. When a strong Atlantic swell arrives they turn hollow, quick and unforgiving, breaking in shallow water over sharp reef, which makes them the preserve of confident intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners are far better served at sandy beaches elsewhere on the island.

Winter, roughly November to March, is the core season, when north and north-west swells from Atlantic storms light up the reefs under warm, sub-tropical skies. The Canaries' mild climate means boardshorts or a light wetsuit year-round, a rare luxury in Europe.

As a base the resort is well equipped, with abundant accommodation, restaurants and nightlife, board rental and easy flights into Tenerife South airport nearby. The surf spots sit close to the promenade, so access is straightforward, though the reefs themselves demand care. For travellers it pairs reliable winter waves with warmth and convenience.
