Ala Moana Beach Park

Ala Moana Beach Park fronts urban Honolulu, a broad, protected stretch of sand between Waikiki and downtown. A calm, man-made swimming lagoon behind a reef makes it a favourite family park and jogging spot, but just offshore, along the harbour channel, lies one of Oahu's most coveted south-shore waves.

Ala Moana Bowls breaks beside the channel, a hollow, fast left that throws a genuine barrel over shallow reef when a good south swell arrives. It is an expert-level wave with a demanding takeoff, a shallow inside section and a crowded, competitive lineup of local surfers who know every shift of the reef and every tide. A shifting sandbar and the man-made channel dictate exactly where the peak sets up, so local knowledge counts for a great deal.

Summer is the season here, the mirror image of the North Shore's winter rhythm, as southern-hemisphere storms send long-period swell up to Hawaii between roughly April and September. On smaller days the reef offers more forgiving peaks and nearby Kewalos gives another option, while a solid pulse turns Bowls into a wave strictly for the very experienced.

Access could hardly be easier, with a large park, shade trees, lawns, showers and parking right beside the water in the heart of the city. The paddle out runs from the beach along the deep channel, which also eases the return. The park itself is flat and accessible, and its central position makes it a natural base for exploring Honolulu's south shore, where several reef breaks line up within paddling distance of one another. The adjoining shopping centre and Magic Island add easy amenities, making this one of the most convenient quality waves anywhere.
