The interoceanic waterway that reshaped world trade, lifting ships 26 meters over the isthmus through a system of locks and the artificial Gatun Lake. The Miraflores Visitor Center near Panama City lets visitors watch vessels transit from viewing decks beside the lock chambers. Partial boat transits and the Agua Clara locks on the Caribbean side offer alternative vantage points.
