Thimlich Ohinga Archaeological Site

Without mortar of any kind, herding communities near Lake Victoria stacked loose stones into massive enclosure walls — and at Thimlich Ohinga, probably built in the 16th century, they still stand. The largest and best kept of these enclosures sheltered families and livestock while marking clan and lineage bonds, a building tradition that endured into the mid-20th century. UNESCO inscribed the site, north-west of Migori in western Kenya, as World Heritage in 2018.
