Mount Kenya National Park/Natural Forest

Equatorial ice caps the jagged summit of Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano that once towered perhaps 6,500 metres and still reaches 5,199 — Africa's second-highest peak. Its remaining dozen glaciers are shrinking fast above U-shaped valleys, the giant groundsels and lobelias of the afro-alpine zone, and forested slopes walked by elephants moving along ancient migration routes toward the Lewa lowlands. UNESCO listed the mountain as natural World Heritage in 1997.
