Carved wooden doors open onto winding lanes in Zanzibar's Stone Town, the Swahili trading port where Africa, Arabia, India and Europe have mingled for over a thousand years. Its townscape survives with rare completeness — merchant mansions, mosques and bazaars recording a culture that absorbed every influence the monsoon trade delivered and made it its own. UNESCO inscribed the Stone Town in 2000.
