Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group: Mounded Tombs of Ancient Japan

Seen from above, the keyhole outline of Daisen Kofun — among the largest tombs on Earth, attributed to Emperor Nintoku — dominates the plain south of Osaka. It leads a group of 49 burial mounds raised for the elite between the 3rd and 6th centuries, ranging from moated giants to modest circles and squares, once dressed with paving stones and haniwa clay figures. UNESCO inscribed the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group in 2019 as the finest testimony of Japan's tomb-building age.
