Haiti's second city and its former colonial capital, laid out on a grid beside a wide bay with rows of arcaded, balconied buildings. It is the gateway to the Citadelle Laferrière and Sans-Souci Palace in the mountains to the south, and to beaches such as Cormier and Labadie along the coast road. Direct international flights have made the north far easier to reach than overland routes suggest.
