At 1,974 meters, Cuba's highest peak rises steeply from the Caribbean within the Sierra Maestra. The two- or three-day guided ascent climbs through several vegetation zones, from dry coastal forest to elfin cloud forest at the summit. A bust of José Martí crowns the top, a national pilgrimage point as much as a hiking goal.
