Sheltered by steep headlands from hurricanes, the deep, narrow bays of English Harbour made an ideal careening and repair station for Britain's Caribbean fleet — and generations of enslaved Africans built the Georgian dockyard that stands here still. The walled complex, known today as Nelson's Dockyard, guarded the sugar interests over which European powers contested the eastern Caribbean. UNESCO inscribed Antigua's naval dockyard and its related archaeological sites in 2016.
